The Costs
Dallas County spends an average of $299 per misdemeanor disposition and $1,499 per felony disposition. Drug trafficking is a felony offense. DWI and drug possession can be either a felony or a misdemeanor. Public intoxication and liquor law violations are misdemeanors. Assuming that all 2001 DWI and drug possession arrests in Dallas County were only misdemeanors, Dallas County spent over $13 million in 2001 on alcohol and drug related arrests.

A violent street gang in Pleasant Grove is no longer in business. Project Safe Neighborhoods, a drug enforcement team that consists of police, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the ATF, announced the arrest of an alleged drug gang with close ties to the Crips. The suspects, ranging in ages from 21 to 28, face a 35-count indictment, including conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

A former Dallas Cowboy football player was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined $25,000 on federal drug trafficking charges. He was arrested after state police confiscated 213 pounds of marijuana from a van in which he was riding.
