Dallas County Drug Impact Index - 2003
|
|
About This Index Alcohol and other drug abuse cost Texas economy an estimated $25.9 billion for 2000, according to a study by the Texas Commission on Alcohol & Drug Abuse. The consequences of substance abuse show significant costs in the form of reduced and lost productivity, crime, premature death, law enforcement, health care, property damage, motor vehicle accidents, and social welfare administration. This Dallas County Drug Impact Index profiles local substance abuse trends beginning in 1996 and continuing through the most recent available data. It relies on archival data collected at the local, state, and national level. In addition to specific drug abuse trends, the index contains information about issues that are directly and indirectly related to substance use and abuse, such as violent crime, sexually transmitted diseases, and school dropout rates. For each indicator, information is provided about its relationship to alcohol and other drug abuse, costs to society, how one can make a difference by getting involved, and examples of resources that address prevention, intervention, and treatment. By providing this broad base of information, the project is issuing a call to action, asking our community to act now and work to reduce continuing high levels of alcohol and other drug abuse. The Dallas County Drug Impact Index was developed by the Greater Dallas Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse and supported by a grant from the Citigroup Foundation. |
